The Minerals Economics Department regularly produces directories that present a holistic view of South Africa’s various minerals industries. Due to the dynamic nature of the minerals industry, they are regularly updated. These directories play an important role within the industry itself and also present valuable information to potential investors.

This directory lists operating mines and quarries, agents and mineral processing plants in the Republic of South Africa. The mines are grouped according to main commodity produced. Names of mines, their owners, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers, commodities mined, operational status, type of mine, magisterial district, province and location are shown. It should be noted that some mining entities have been split into sub-units to comply with certain provisions of the Mine Health and Safety Act 1996, Act 29 of 1996.

This directory lists all colleries operating or due to be commissioned in South Africa. It contains details of the mines, including coal sales figures. The information is grouped under the names of the mining groups and controlling companies and listed in group or mine order of importance. Included are mine outputs, seams worked, coal types, mining and preparation methods, transport, sales tonnage, and main markets. Statistical tables have been revised and updated. There is also a map of South Africa's goldfields (Appendix 3).

The so-called Gold Directory provides complete coverage of the gold mining industry in South Africa. An overview of gold occurrences with a locality map is presented, followed by an account of South Africa's position in terms of world gold production, current production within the Republic and an outline of the structure of the gold mining industry. The main body of the Directory consists of an alphabetical list of the operating companies, and includes details of factors such as production, mineral reserves and financial results. Information contained in the directory was obtained from Mineral Economics Directorate statistics and company financial reports.

The directory includes an alphabetical list of the operating companies, and includes details of factors such as production, mineral reserves and financial results. This details the South African Dimension stone industry, focusing on ownership. All types of dimension stone that are currently produced in the country are listed. Granite is the most economically important stone produced, followed by slate. Data contained in this edition were supplied by the various mining, processing and marketing companies listed.

The industrial mineral industry of South Africa is relatively small compared with other metal and mineral industries in South Africa, but is still very important due to its strategic value. Aggregate and sand, phosphate rock concentrate, sulphur, dimension stone, andalusite (alumino-silicate), vermiculite, silica and fluorspar are South Africa's major industrial minerals with regard to sales value. Most South African industrial mines and quarries can be classified as small-scale. In addition, various forms of sulphur were recovered as by-products from other operations.
