Overview
The main functions of the Mine Surveying Directorate of the Department of Minerals and Energy are to:
- Develop regulations and monitor mine surveying practices in order to promote a culture of safety and health on mines;
- Ensure the safe utilisation of undermined land for development purposes;
- Ensure safe and optimal exploitation of mineral resources;
- Identify hazards and risk control;
- Undertake control surveys during the rehabilitation of abandoned mine dumps and small-scale mining operations;
- Offer mapping and draughting services; and
- Train and develop new personnel.
The Directorate Mine Surveying is divided into four sections, namely Western
Section, Central Section, Eastern Section as well the Mapping and Archives
section.
Western Section
The Western Section covers the Western Cape, Northern Cape and North West
Regions.
Central Section
The Central Section covers the Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng Regions.
Eastern Section
The Eastern Section covers the Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Regions.
Mapping and Archives Division
The Mapping and Archives division covers the archiving of defunct mine plans and Departmental copies..
