| The catalytic reduction
of N2O emissions with a secondary catalyst inside the ammonia
reactor of the No. 9 nitric acid plant at African Explosives Ltd (AEL) [PDF, 789 kb] |
The project proposes the reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by 80 - 90% from nitric acid production at the African Explosives Limited's Modderfontein No. 9 plant. The project activity involves the installation of pelletised catalyst inside the ammonia oxidation reactor underneath the precious metal gauzes. AEL produces nitric acid for commercial explosives for mining activities and ammonium nitrate solutions for manufacturing of fertilizers. The plant (AEL Plant 9) produces 69 629 tonnes of nitric acid per annum and the proposed project activity will reduce 57, 097 tonnes CO2e per annum. Status: Not registered

| Mondi Richards
Bay Biomass Project [PDF, 859 kb] |
The proposed project consists of the collection of biomass waste that consist of fines, contaminated wood chips, off-cuts etc. presently landfilled at a municipal landfill site and plantation waste currently left in the plantations to decay; transport of the collected biomass from nearby facilities and plantations to the Mondi Richards Bay operation for use as energy source; the replacement of coal (fossil fuel) by waste biomass in an existing co-fired boiler that produces steam at the operation. The project will reduce an estimated 239 000 tonnes CO2e/year.

Turbine Co-generation in Richards Bay, South Africa [PDF, 1.11 mb] |
The purpose of the project activity is switching from coal and imported electricity from the national grid to gas using an on-site combined cycle gas turbine. The project activity proposes the installation of a gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator and all additional utility plant necessary at the Richards Bay operation. The production outputs are electricity (from the gas turbine) and heat (from the heat recovery unit) supplied to a pulp and paper mill. The installation of the cogeneration system will take place at the Mondi Richards Bay operation premises. The project will reduce an estimated 130876 tonnes CO2e/year

Conversion from Coal to Bark Fired Project [PDF, 2.21 mb] |
The project involves the conversion of a boiler to enable co-firing of biomass (bark), with coal at the Tugela Mill Pulp and Paper Mill. The biomass will directly replace the current use of coal for steam production in the mill and use the waste bark for steam generation in a biomass thermal energy boiler. The project consists of the complete replacement of the boiler bed and fuel feed conveyor system at the number 10 coal fired boiler to a biomass-fired fluidised bed boiler. The thermal capacity of the new boiler is rated at 22 MWth

| Star Diamonds Methane Capture Project [PDF, 422kb] |
The project involves capturing and flaring of methane resulting from underground mining operations at the Star Diamond Mine. The methane originates from coal steams in the area and is vented by pressure through geological faults into the mining shafts (underground working areas), and it has caused fatal explosions in the past. The project entails creation of wells to capture the methane and pipe it to the surface for flaring

| PetroSA biogas to energy project [PDF, 291KB] |
PetroSA started to operate since 1987 as a gas to liquids plant at Duinzicht, some 12 kilometres from the town of Mossel Bay on the south coast of South Africa. The production process at Duinzicht leads to waste process water that since the inception of the Plant has been dealt with by way of anaerobic digestion. The anaerobic digestion is continuous and a critical process for the operation of the PetroSA plant. In the anaerobic digestion process biogas is naturally generated. The Plant is equipped with a smokestack that houses a flaring apparatus. Since the inception of the Plant, this biogas has been flared. It is estimated that the equivalent of at least 1300 gigawatthours of gross heat value has been wasted in this manner over the lifetime of the plant. The present project can be summed up very simply as using the waste gas presently flared to generate electricity to be used onsite by PetroSA. The corporation will henceforth purchase less electricity from the national grid.
